6G network – a new communication standard? 6G network – a new communication standard?

6G network – a new communication standard?

Mobile telephony has been with us for over three decades. As this technology has developed, new services have emerged – initially, just phone calls, then SMS messages, and today we can conduct live video calls. Currently, the ITU is working on the next generation – the 6G network. What new features will its implementation bring? What can users expect from this technology?

Although 5G technology is only just gaining popularity worldwide, the telecommunications industry is already working intensively on the next generation of wireless networks – 6G. The European Commission, in collaboration with the United States and others, has led the primary effort. It is working to prepare Europe for 6G, ensuring we are ready for next-generation communications. This technology is expected to revolutionize communications even more radically than its predecessors, and Europe has the potential to become a leading global 6G supplier if it directs its investments appropriately. The new generation will not only increase data transmission speeds but also introduce new, advanced services and applications that could transform everyday life, the economy, and industry. The first products and infrastructure are expected by the end of this decade.

What is 6G?

6G (Sixth Generation) is the sixth generation of cellular networks, expected to arrive around 2030. It is expected to offer unprecedented data speeds of up to 1 terabit per second (Tbps), a huge leap compared to current 5G speeds of up to 10 gigabits per second (Gbps). However, speed is only one aspect of this technology.

Key features of 6G include:

  1. Low latency – 6G will reduce network response times to below 1 millisecond, enabling applications in critical systems such as remote surgery and autonomous vehicles.
  2. Ability to support new applications – Technologies such as augmented reality (AR), virtual reality (VR) and mixed reality (MR) will be able to operate on an unprecedented scale, gaining full immersion and interactivity.
  3. Artificial Intelligence (AI) Integration – 6G networks will be intelligent and autonomous. Using AI, they will be able to independently optimize their performance and adapt to user needs in real time.
  4. Hyperconnectivity – 6G will provide widespread and reliable connectivity in places that are currently difficult to access, such as rural areas or remote corners of the globe, thanks to new solutions such as next-generation satellite networks.

To sum up

6G is the future of wireless communications, transforming the way we live and work in modern societies. This technology will open up new possibilities in areas such as medicine, industry, communications, and entertainment. Although its commercial implementation is not planned until the early 2030s, it's worth following its developments today, as 6G will likely become a key technology for the global economy and social development.
